Overview

Curaleaf Clinic is a leading UK medical cannabis clinic that provides specialist consultations for patients whose conditions have not responded to conventional treatments. It was the first medical cannabis clinic registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and has since become known for its high standards of care. The clinic offers online consultations across a wide range of specialties, including chronic pain, psychiatry, neurology, and palliative care, with personalised treatment plans and direct-to-home prescription delivery. As part of the Curaleaf International group, the clinic benefits from a fully integrated model that includes in-house pharmacy and laboratory services.

Brief

Curaleaf Clinic had never worked with a designer before, which presented a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact. The existing application was built entirely with default MUI components—functional, but lacking personality, cohesion, and clarity. The patient onboarding process felt confusing and overly complicated, and the overall user experience was unintuitive and visually outdated. The brief, though informal, was clear: “work your magic.” The goal was to redesign the entire application to feel modern, intuitive, and human-centred—something the team could be proud to share with both patients and practitioners.

Approach

The first step was understanding the problem from all angles. I gathered insights directly from patients—learning what they liked, what they didn’t, and how they interacted with the system day-to-day. I also incorporated stakeholder input and reviewed countless user session recordings to pinpoint where things were going wrong. It became clear early on that the onboarding journey needed the most attention. From there, I mapped out key user flows across the app, with a particular focus on simplifying and improving the onboarding experience. I then built a clear and scalable design system to ensure consistency and cross-team alignment.

The process included wireframing, iterating, and revising designs based on feedback and testing—following the full UX cycle. For developer handoff, I provided detailed annotations, held walkthrough sessions, and stayed closely involved to answer questions and ensure a smooth implementation.

COMPLETE DESIGN SYSTEM TO OPTIMISE WORKFLOW

The main challenge for this project, was to create a strong design system that we could use on Mobile & Web apps. I used Atomic Design principles to create base components (text styles, color palette, buttons, icons, tags, inputs etc…). More complex components have been added to the design system all along the project, following the needs of the UI. Once finished, the design system had more than 800 components and was fully scalable.

CONSISTENCY IS KEY

When designing the screens, i tried to keep the same navigation & interaction patterns. The goal was to make sure that the users could use the product efficiently.

Final words

This project stands out as one of my proudest achievements. From the very beginning, it was a joy to work on—a rare combination of creative freedom, meaningful impact, and collaboration across teams. The redesigned experience received overwhelmingly positive feedback from patients, who found the new journey clearer, faster, and more approachable.

Stakeholders and internal teams were equally pleased, describing the outcome as a major step forward for the company. Collaboration ran smoothly throughout, and any challenges that arose were quickly addressed. Most importantly, the improvements led to a noticeable increase in patients being onboarded more easily and efficiently—a result that speaks for itself.
